Really? Doomed teens swapping spit in the same spot where the most famous doomed teen of the 20th century was hiding out for her life? Isn’t that just a tad tasteless and self-serving? They head down to the Anne Frank House, crawl up into the attic and make out while the other tourists applaud them. Who would do such a thing? Who moves to Amsterdam to drown themself in booze and not smoke weed?Īfter they storm out of Van Houten’s townhouse, Gus and Hazel Grace do the only thing that teen tourists in Amsterdam would do in the same situation. He is a mean, cynical, scotch-swilling drunk who insults the wide-eyed innocent cancer kids to their fresh faces. When Gus and Hazel Grace show up on Van Houten’s doorstep, the great writer turns out to be a royal jackass. This kid is a flippin’ saint, I’m telling you, a saint. He also lines up a face-to-face meeting with Van Houten. Thanks to some sort of Make-A-Wish-type organization, Gus cashes in a favor and buys plane tickets to Holland. It was written by an American author named Peter Van Houten (Willem Dafoe), who fled the book’s fame by moving to Amsterdam.

Naturally, “An Imperial Affliction” tells the story of a girl who has cancer.

Hazel Grace forces Gus to read her favorite novel “An Imperial Affliction,” which is an obvious nod to “Infinite Jest” by David Foster Wallace (who, incidentally, killed himself). My first clue was when Gus and Hazel Grace went on a picnic in a public park where the children’s playground equipment was shaped like the bones of a human skeleton. There is no way that dude is making it to the closing credits of the movie. It’s there she meets Augustus Waters (Ansel Elgort), who looks like comedian Andy Samberg’s cuter, younger brother.Īugustus, who lost his right leg to cancer, is so sensitive, so quick-witted and so dang polite that he may as well have a bull’s eye painted on his forehead. Her mother (the lovely Laura Dern) encourages Hazel Grace to attend a cancer-support group meeting held in the basement of the local Episcopal church.

That left her with an air hose in her nose and an oxygen tank, which she drags along behind her like carry-on luggage in an airport. “The Fault In Our Stars” focuses on Hazel Grace Lancaster (Shailene Woodley), an Indianapolis teenager who has lived most of her life with metastatic thyroid cancer.
